This week was a very special week for me. My princess Toya turned 6 last Tuesday! When I adopted Toya, she was only about 8 weeks old, and we bonded from the very start. 🥰❤️

Toya is a Husky and Springer mix. She’s very energetic and bubbly. She loves to run and play – especially in puddles 😅😂 – but her favourite thing in the world is swimming.

I just can’t imagine my life without my sweet princess. She fills my heart with such joy, I can’t even explain it. She is my everything.

Since this post is about dogs, I did some research, and I found 21 awesome facts about dogs that you might have not known!

21 Awesome Facts About Dogs

1. Dogs are descendants of wolves! 🐺

All dogs, regardless of their breed, are direct descendants of wolves and are technically of the same species.

2. Your one true love… 💖💝

In 2014, I adopted my fury princess, Toya. Since then, she sincerely became the love of my life. Turns out, petting a dog and gazing into their eyes releases a “love hormone” called Oxytocin — for both yourself and your dog.

3. Don’t forget to wish your dog sweet dreams. ✨

If you your dog sleeps with you, you probably noticed your dog growling, twitching, or maybe sort of “running” while they sleep. This is because according to canine researcher Dr. Stanely Coren, a dog’s brain wave patters during sleep are similar to those of a human. This suggests that dogs dream just like us!

4. Your dog is as smart as a two-year old kid! 👶🏼🐶

Wondering how your child – who’s only two – developed what seems to be the most adorable bond with the family dog? It might be because they speak the same language, roughly 250 words and gestures.

With approximately 75.8 million dogs, the United States has the highest dog population.

6. The Basenji is the only barkless dog in the whole world.

Basenjis are known to be among the oldest dog breeds. When expressing themselves, they make a unique “yodelling” sound.

For these past 26 years, Labradors have been the most popular breed in the United States.

8. Why do dogs curl up to sleep? 😪😴

Dogs have age-old instinct to curl up in a super cute ball when they sleep. They do this to keep themselves warm and to protect vital organs while they sleep.

9. Dogs miss you when you’re away for long! 😢🥺

It has been proven that if conditioned to, dogs can predict future events that happen at a specific time.

10. The oldest breed in the world.

The Saluki is the world’s oldest dog breed. They appear in ancient Egyptian tombs that date back to 2100 B.C.

11. Dogs smell your fear! 🙀👀

Your dog’s sense of smell is approximately 100,000 times better than yours. When a human is fearful, they perspire, and a dog is able to pick up on such change.

12. Disease detectors. 🤧

A phenomenal fact about dogs is that they can be trained to detect diseases in humans, such as cancer. They may be able to sniff out cancer cells simply through smelling a person’s breath.

13. Wet nose.

Dogs have wet noses because they secrete a mucous that absorbs scent chemicals.

14. Dogs can catch the subway! 🚇

Stray dogs in Russia have learned how to ride the complex subway system, and get off at specific stops in search of food.

15. Second fastest land animal.

Compared to the average 19mph of many dogs, a greyhound can run at an incredible 45mph. With such amazing speed, they are the second fastest land animal behind the Cheetah.

16. Rolling in a puddle.

When dogs roll in something, it could be because they like it and want to take its scent with them.

17. The jealousy is real… 🙄

A study at UCSD claims that your fury buddy can genuinely get jealous when seeing you showing affection for another animal.

18. 900 million dogs! 🐕🐶🦴

There are approximately 900 million dogs (including feral and wild dogs) around the whole world — of which, 3/4 are strays.

19. Spiked collars.

In ancient Greece, spiked collars were originally fashioned to protect dogs’ throats from wolf attacks.

20. When a puppy is born, he is blind, deaf, and toothless.

Puppies are born blind and deaf, with both their eyes and ears sealed shut. For their first two weeks of life, newborn pups experience the world entirely through touch and smell. During the third week their eyes and ears open, giving tiny pups a whole new way to experience life.

21. Legs up!

Male dogs raise their legs while urinating to aim higher — in order to leave a message that they are tall and intimidating. That said, some wild dogs in Africa try to run up tree trunks while they are urinating to appear to be very large.
